The Sting (Universal Legacy Series)The Sting (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $9.90
The original twist-at-the-end film. Be prepared to keep your finger on the pause button, so you can stop to explain who's good, who's bad, and what's what.
Gone with the Wind (Four-Disc Collector's Edition) 1939Gone with the Wind (Four-Disc Collector's Edition) 1939
Buy used from: $39.99
Everybody has to see this at least once. Best with older children, not only because of the length, but also because you'll undoubtedly have some explaining to do. This was, after all, made in 1939, that was then, and this is now. They won't believe you when you tell them what a big deal that last line was. Still and all, a great romance with a heartbreaker ending.
Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $10.45
A great lesson in love, forgiveness, and sacrifice to a greater cause. A little history lesson. And proof that snappy dialogue has been around a lot longer than they think.
The Miracle Worker [Region 2]The Miracle Worker [Region 2]
Brilliant acting and a stunningly beautiful story. A great way to spark interest in one of the most intelligent, fascinating women of the last century, and an object lesson in what ignorance can do, even when well-meant.
To Kill a Mockingbird (Universal Legacy Series)To Kill a Mockingbird (Universal Legacy Series)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $14.19
Beautifully acted and filmed, and the children are perfect. Save this one for later, but do watch it.
The Great Escape (2-Disc Collector's Set)The Great Escape (2-Disc Collector's Set)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.58
Terrific and based on a true story, it shows what wonderful and terrible things people are capable of. If you enjoy this one, check out the NOVA "Great Escape" show as a follow-up.
Apollo 13 (Widescreen 2-Disc Anniversary Edition)Apollo 13 (Widescreen 2-Disc Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $3.86
The best space movie around, bar none. Be ready to explain what a slide rule is...then be prepared to explain how in heck we got guys on the moon without using calculators.
A Christmas Carol (Original B&W Version)A Christmas Carol (Original B&W Version)
Buy used from: $79.98
The original and best version. Alistair Sim is frighteningly creepy, and then delightfully gleeful. Get over the fact that Tiny Tim is, in fact, 12. And don't bother with the colorized version - watch it in glorious black and white.
It's a Wonderful LifeIt's a Wonderful Life
Buy used from: $16.99
Another movie everybody should see at least once. A great story about losing your dreams and then finding them again.
Treasure Island (1990)Treasure Island (1990)
Buy used from: $22.92
Far and away the best adaptation of this story. Some fairly realistic scenes of "murder, battle, and sudden death," so not for very young kids, but terrific for any old enough to understand fiction. Bad news: despite repeated entreaties from fans, not available yet on DVD. Good news: you get to watch a really cute 16-year-old Christian Bale in the role of Jim Hawkins.
